If you’re interested in history, you may be interested in drinking some delicious historical oriental coffee. Some of these varieties are Desheng, Chang Pao Cun, Fang Huiqin, and Captain John Smith. These coffees are all delicious and worth trying. But how do you choose one over another?
Desheng
Desheng Coffee is one of the oldest coffee brands in China, and has a rich history. The company was established by Chang Pao Cun in 1934. He was born in Zhejiang and moved to Shanghai as a child. He later worked in a vegetable market on Seymour Road, which is now Shaanxi North Road.
History
Eventually, he introduced his wife to a neighbor who introduced him to Desheng Coffee. The company expanded its business by offering Hong Kong coffee exports in 1949. By 1950, Desheng planned to open a branch in Kowloon.Desheng also managed a third location in Shanghai, in the French Concession.
Famous Stars
The location was originally owned by a famous 1930’s film star, Lan’gen Han. However, the business failed, so he enlisted the help of a friend, Pao Chun.The original location was Taishan Road, in the French Concession. The building is located across from the hipster coffee shop No Coffee, which was founded in 1924.
Shops
The coffee shop was later moved to 111 Central Arcade, where it celebrated its 40th anniversary in 1935. The cafe remained in operation until the end of the war, when it was still listed in the Shanghai telephone directory.
Chang Pao Cun
One of the most famous Shanghai coffeehouses, Desheng Coffee, was founded in 1935 by Chang Pao Cun and his wife. This was the first Chinese-owned large-scale coffee roastery in the city. The company imported raw coffee beans from abroad and roasted them in small batches before selling them in cans to Western restaurants.
Trademark
Its trademark was the C.P.C., not to be confused with the Communist Party of China.After several years of successful business, the Chang family was acclaimed as the founders of Shanghai’s coffee industry. Chang served as a representative of the Shanghai Coffee Association for ten years, and was often called “the coffee king” in Chinese newspapers.
Shanghai Coffee
Chang’s coffee was now used in seven out of every ten Shanghai coffee shops. In December 1944, Pao Chun opened the second C.P.C. Chang family coffee shop on 10 Central. In the following years, Pao Chun’s wife passed away.
Fang Huiqin
Fang Huiqin was married to Chang Pao Cun in 1934. Born in 1917 in Zhenhai, Zhejiang, she moved to Shanghai at an early age and worked at a vegetable market on Seymour Rd, now known as Shaanxi North Road. When Chang Pao Cun moved to Shanghai, he introduced his wife to his business partner and they established Desheng Coffee.
Roasted coffee
Fang Huiqin personally roasted coffee beans, controlled the temperature, and selected the recipes from the East.The couple’s legacy lives on in the United States. Their son, Charles Zhang.
Businesses
Emigrated to the United States in the 1980s and has since opened multi-million dollar businesses in the food and beverage industry. He continues to carry on their parents’ entrepreneurial legacy. Captain John Smith
The name “Captain John Smith” may sound foreign to you, but it has historical significance. In the seventeenth century, Smith was a prolific author and cartographer who vividly portrayed the natural abundance of the New World. His writings helped stir the appetite of prospective English settlers to colonize the New World.
Served
The first cup of Captain John Smith’s Delicious Historical Oriental Coffee was served at his home in Virginia in 1604. The name is derived from the voyage of the same name. During the voyage, Smith sailed more than 11,000 miles and made several stops along the way. He also learned the rules of war and read books on politics.
Events
Smith was an observant of the events during the founding years of the United States, and was regarded as a hero by his peers. Thomas Jefferson described him as an honest, sensible, and well-informed man. While some historians have contended that Smith tended to promote himself in his writings, he was generous in recognizing other people who helped the colony survive. His autobiographical writings were later confirmed as accurate by scholars.
